How to check a link preview
- Paste the public URL of the page you want to share.
- Compare its title, description, and image across the platform previews.
- Fix missing tags or inaccessible images, publish the changes, and check again.
When the preview looks wrong
Start with og:title, og:description, and og:image in the page’s HTML. Use a public image URL that returns an image without a login. Check Twitter-card tags separately if the X preview differs.
If the tags are correct but a shared link still looks old, check the platform’s cache. Our Open Graph testing guide links to platform inspectors and explains common issues.
Link-preview checker FAQ
What does the link-preview checker inspect?
It fetches a public page’s HTML, reads its title, description, Open Graph tags, and Twitter-card tags, and checks whether its preview images can be fetched. It then shows approximate Facebook, LinkedIn, X, and Slack previews.
Why does the preview differ from Facebook, LinkedIn, X, or Slack?
Each platform has its own layout, crawler, and cache. A platform may still show an older image or be blocked by your server even when this checker can fetch the page. Use the platform’s own inspector or a test share to confirm the final result.
Does this refresh cached social previews?
No. Checking a URL here does not clear another platform’s cache. After fixing your metadata, request a fresh scrape with the platform’s own tools where available.
Can I check a private page or metadata added with JavaScript?
Use a publicly accessible URL. The checker reads the HTML returned by the server; it does not sign in or run the page’s JavaScript. Include social metadata in the initial HTML so crawlers can read it.
Can ScreenshotOne generate an Open Graph image?
Yes. The ScreenshotOne API can render an HTML template or a webpage as an image. Host the result at a public URL and reference it in og:image. The checker inspects that URL; image generation is a separate step.
Need an image for your link?
Generate a social card from your own HTML with ScreenshotOne, or capture a webpage for a visual bookmark. See the Open Graph image guide and the production checklist for templates, storage, and caching.
For an app that needs both a screenshot and page data, follow the screenshot and metadata tutorial.
